POWAI
Advanced Locality Management

PowaiALM is a dedicated platform for Advanced Locality Management, empowering residents and fostering neighborhood development in close cooperation with the MCGM.

  • Powai Lake, located in Mumbai's northern suburbs, is a man-made, 130-year-old water body originally constructed by the British in 1890–1891 to supplement the city's drinking water. It covers roughly 163 to 220 hectares with depths of 3-12 meters, now serving as a biodiversity hotspot and popular recreational spot, though the water is considered non-potable.

Origin: Created by building two small dams across the Mithi River between hillocks (lower slopes of the Western Ghats).

Biodiversity: The area is a thriving habitat for wildlife, including Indian marsh crocodiles, various fish species, and migratory birds like the Watercock and Peregrine Falcon.

Ecological Status: While it was a source of drinking water, the lake has suffered from severe pollution and degradation, resulting in the water being declared unfit for consumption.

Restoration: In 2002, the lake was included in the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) for revival, improving its condition from a highly polluted (hypertrophic) state.

Name Origin: Named after the Powai Estate belonging to Parsi merchant Framaji Kavasji.

  • Today 20/02/2026, members of Powai ALM visited the ongoing sewer line work site along with officials from BMC and local MLA Dilip Lande to review on-ground progress.

The project has been consistently pursued by Powai ALM over the past many months through representations, follow-ups, and community engagement with the concerned authorities. It is encouraging to now see implementation underway.

During the visit, BMC officials shared the current status and next steps, while several practical concerns from residents were also conveyed.

We appreciate the support extended by all stakeholders present today. As always, Powai ALM will continue to monitor progress closely and work constructively with the authorities to ensure the project delivers meaningful environmental improvement.

Detailed technical updates from BMC will be shared shortly in the community newsletter

  • Powai Lake is battling severe pollution with roughly 18 million litres per day (MLD) of untreated sewage flowing into it, causing massive water hyacinth blooms and depleting oxygen, which threatens the lake's crocodile population. The BMC has launched a major project to plug sewage inflows and remove weeds by May 2026.

    Key Issues:

Sewage Ingress: Approximately 18 MLD of untreated sewage from surrounding areas (Ganesh Nagar, Persubaug, etc.) enters through 19 culverts and drains.

Weed Proliferation: Nutrient-rich wastewater fuels rampant growth of water hyacinth and other weeds, covering up to 80% of the lake surface, threatening marine life.

Ecological Damage: The Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) is over 115 mg/l, far exceeding safe limits, resulting in near-zero dissolved oxygen at inlets.

Waste Dumping: The lake receives about half a ton of waste daily, including plastics and electronic waste.

OUR MISSION

Civic Engagement for a Resilient and Future-Ready Powai

PowaiALM serves as a foundational platform for residents to collaborate directly with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). We focus on implementing advanced locality management initiatives that prioritize waste reduction, infrastructure maintenance, and community health. By uniting the neighborhood, we aim to transform Powai into a global benchmark for urban living and ecological balance.

Resources & Initiatives

Waste Management

Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department: Handles waste segregation, collection, and disposal, specifically dry waste.

Implementing decentralized composting and zero-waste solutions across Powai residential societies in close co-operation with MCGM municipal teams to ensure sustainable urban living.

Through the initiatives and close coordination with BMC S-Ward representatives, around 40+ Aluminum dust bins were setup in various locations in the Hiranandani Gardens neighborhoods along side Cliff Avenue, Ridge Street, Orchard Avenue and more.

Regular meetings with SWM team has resulted in periodic clean up drives near Panch Kutir and other restaurants.

Green Spaces

Developing neighborhood afforestation projects and community-managed pocket parks. These green lungs enhance local air quality and provide essential leisure spaces for residents.

Powai ALM has championed the cause of preservation of green spaces as well as carrying out plantation drives. Along with BMC S-ward garden department representatives around 100 indigenous saplings were planted by members and BMC staff in BMC Forest Park.

The Heritage Garden Lotus pond was cleaned up and fencing done to prevent passer by throwing garbage in the dried up pond. Today the pond is blooming again with lotus flowers.

Civic Resources

Providing residents with streamlined access to locality development plans, direct MCGM grievance reporting, and essential neighborhood safety protocols for community benefit.

Ward Administrative Offices: Meetings are often chaired by the Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the respective ward.

Building & Factory Department: Manages structural issues and illegal construction complaints.

Roads & Maintenance Department: Addresses local road, footpath, and drainage repairs.

Health Department: Focuses on sanitation, disease prevention, and public health, including cleanliness drives.
